Recycling cans and paper is not enough anymore since global warming is still threatening. To bring your concern with the environment to a whole new level, you should make your home eco-friendly. There are few simple things you should consider for making a green home and saving the planet.
A green home means an energy efficient home. To save energy and lower your bills you have to pay attention when using various appliances and devices. Replace old appliances with new ones that do not require that much energy consumption and make sure to turn off and unplug appliances when not in use so they would not continue using the electricity. Another thing you can do is switching to fluorescent bulbs and you will notice the difference immediately. Insulating your home and fixing your doors and windows will help you preserve heat or cold in and these will keep you from losing any energy or overusing some appliances.
Green Roof System
Green roofs are not only good for the environment, but they are also perfect for sustainable landscape designs and can improve the value of your house. Once I switched to the green roof, I was really amazed how well it fits in with any style and design and it is a perfect insulation for my home. Since it is not letting any heat out, the bills dropped drastically and saved me a lot of energy. Also, the green roofs do not require costly maintenance since their materials are protected against UV degradation and hail and storm conditions. What is more, you can very well soundproof your home with this roof since it minimizes the transfer of noise.
Ban Toxic Products
You have to find the alternatives for harsh chemical cleaning products which can be harmful for your health and the environment. Also, you can start using microfiber cloths for cleaning instead of various detergents and cleaning products. These cloths are designed to attract the dust, and you can also use damp cloths for the same purpose. Your home should also be pesticide-free, and for getting rid of insects you should seal any cracks in windows, walls, doors etc.
Do not Waste Water
Water preservation is another important factor for making a green home. To save water you should never turn on your washing machines and dishwasher until they are full. Also, limiting your shower time can contribute a lot. Turn on an egg timer and give everyone 5 minutes to shower. Make sure that you do not have any leaking taps, and start buying bottled water and simply refill. Bottles should be made of glass or bioplastic to last longer and avoid pollution. In your garden, you can start collecting rainwater and use it for watering your plants.
Clear the Air
Lastly, you should always keep the air in your home clear and fresh. Ban smoking inside since cigarettes are filled with toxic chemicals and are generally bad for everyone. By growing plants indoors you are filtering the air, and some plants can even absorb all the harmful pollutants from carpets, electric devices and furniture.
Follow these simple steps and make your home the greenest in your neighbourhood. You will be healthier and hopefully everyone would follow your lead and make this planet a better place to live.
