Eco Nappy

November 24, 2008

Many children need to use nappy more and more everyday. So, if we can use biodegradable for produce nappy, it will be good for our earth.

The Eco Nappy Debate – What’s Best?
By Helen Porter

It’s not rocket science that disposable nappies like Pampers and Huggies are not enviromentally friendly. This style of nappy takes a very long time to break down, and as a result fills up landfills really fast. Although they may seem convenient, you have to remember they are usually treated with disgusting chemicals for extra absorbency. If you have ever broken a nappy up you can see the gel, which can rupture if heavily wet or soiled. If this happens then your baby can get a very bad nappy rash.

So what are your options? Well at naturecounts.com we have a solution where you get the best of both worlds.

Daytime, we recommend using Cotton nappies which are the original breathable nappies. These nappies have moved on from the tricky folds and nappy pins and are now elasticated for a neat yet leakproof fit.

They are completely natural with no gels or chemicals to absorb liquid, just the natural absorbency of the cloth, which makes cotton soft and kind on your baby’s skin. One-way disposable liners allow moisture to pass through helping to keep baby’s skin dry. Using cotton nappies rather than disposables saves roughly £600 for a first child, and £800 for a second child if parents use the same cotton nappies again. In the evening or out and about we recommend considering ‘Biodegradable Disposables’. MOLTEX have all the features of leading conventional disposables – but with one unique difference. They are the only eco disposable nappy with an unbleached cellulose core. The new generation of MOLTEX oko nappies are produced from 50% renewable resources, are 100% chlorine free and made with 20% biodegradable absorbent granules in the core. The outer film of the nappies and the packaging are 100% biodegradable! Europe’s leading Eco disposable. Other brands include Nature Boy and Girl, these are Scandinavian-made and, are considered by some mums to be not as high performing as Moltex.

Tushies Gel- and Perfume-Free Eco Disposables are becoming widely available online in the UK. They are free from the absorbent gel that is found in other disposables. They claim to be 80% degradable.

Bambo Nature has limited availability but you can find online retailers at naturecounts.com. The pulp used to make these nappies is described as “environmentally compatible” and is derived from controlled Scandinavian Forests. They are bleached with oxygen rather than chlorine, which claims to reduces their environmental impact. Top this off with early potty training (like, at 1 yr old) and you have found a reasonable compromise to stop filling landfill sites.

It’s not just about the nappy but also the products you use on your babys bottom. Babywipes, baby lotion, nappy cream can also be eco-friendly. Visit naturecounts.com for all the latest offers and products.

Why switch?

Well Disposable nappies use 3.5 times more energy than real nappies to produce and take up to 500 years to completely decompose. Close to 3 billion nappies will end up on landfills each year

By caring for the environment now, you’re caring for the future environment of your baby. Visit naturecounts.com for more information and great offers on disposable nappies.
