By John Alice
More and more professional carpet cleaners are looking towards environmentally friendly products, which are not only better for the environment, but are also better for the health of those living or working in an area that needs regular cleaning. Organic carpet cleaning by way of biodegradable cleaning products is the wave of the present and future in regards to all types of professional cleaning including area rug cleaning, wall-to-wall carpet cleaning and fine rug cleaning.

The chemical agents found in conventional cleaners such as chlorine and phosphates have been found to be damaging to the environment. Therefore, it is recommended that all carpet cleaning as well as furniture and upholstery cleaning be completed without the use of harsh detergents that contain phosphates as well as chlorine bleaches. There are much safer, organic cleaning products available today and are the only safe alternative.
A biodegradable cleaning product such as organic detergent means that something is “capable of decaying through the action of living organisms”. In other words, it means that it can be “decomposed by biological agents” such as bacteria. Over time a biodegradable product will break down into something that is harmless. When a product is non-toxic it means that only in large quantities can the product cause harm and then become toxic. It is wise to avoid carpet cleaners who use harmful chemicals that are known carcinogens such as benzene, formaldehyde, styrene, toluene and xylene.
According to the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics, one in every three individuals residing in the United States suffers from a respiratory problem be it allergies, asthma, bronchitis or sinusitis, among others. For this reason finding biodegradable cleaning products and employing non-toxic carpet cleaning methods is so important. All people should seek ways of decreasing synthetic chemicals in their living and working environments and not just those who suffer from respiratory problems. Exposure to an excessive amount of synthetic chemicals can increase a person’s risk of developing respiratory illnesses.
There are countless reasons to choose organic carpet cleaning , and here are but a few examples:
- Does not pollute our earth and water
- Only natural ingredients are used
- Non-Toxic and Biodegradable = Does not harm humans or animals
- Natural ingredients
- Support smaller business

I’ve been cleaning carpets now for a little over seven years. Since I started using organic products a year ago, my breathing has improved greatly and I haven’t had any skin rashes. I use to break out all over my hands and forearms. I just hope the cleaners get a little better in the future. It takes a bit more elbow grease to get out some spots. Overall great post John.
